Chantal Yzermans is a performer , choreographer and researcher. Her work focuses on translating historical materials across disciplines and investigating the transformative potential of appropriating iconic works.

As founder and artistic director of the ensemble Radical Low, she collaborates with musicians, performers, and visual artists to develop long-form research projects and site-responsive works.

Since her studies at the Royal Conservatory of Antwerp (Belgium), Chantal’s fascination with movement—rooted in the investigation of the human body through a historical filter—has underpinned her work. Her time in New York (2000–2006) proved pivotal: she studied with Merce Cunningham and his company, focusing on technique and choreography, while also working in the archives of the Merce Cunningham Foundation under dance historian David Vaughan.

Several of RADICAL LOW’s improvisational and small-scale projects were realized in New York venues during this period, connected to residencies at Columbia University (Electronic Music Department) Movement Research/Judson Church and Danspace Project at St Marks. Through various collaborations, RADICAL LOW formed artistic associations with real-time video artists including Kurt Ralske, 242 Pilots, and Hrvatski.

Returning to Europe in 2008, Chantal presented performances in Antwerp, Madrid, and Paris, engaging with prominent artistic figures. In 2009, Belgian director Jan Fabre offered her a residency at Troubleyn/Laboratorium in Antwerp, where she has since become a regular contributor. During a residency at Teatro Danza Canal (2012–2013), she collaborated with artists Carlos Aires and Tania Arias.

In 2015, she initiated a research project with circadian neuroscientist Dr. Joëlle Adrien (INSERM) and musician MADMOIZEL at La Cité Internationale des Arts in Paris, culminating in the artwork NOBOLERO, which premiered at Centre Pompidou Metz in March 2017. In 2019, in collaboration with architect Samyra Moumouh and composer Yannick Franck, she created the multimedia production Thirty Three Degrees.

To date, RADICAL LOW has performed at a selection of international venues, including:
Centre Pompidou Metz (FR), Connecting Media (Hamburg, DE), Festival Escena Contemporánea (Madrid, ES), Rencontres Chorégraphiques Internationales (FR), Bruno Glint Gallery (London, UK), Carreau du Temple (Paris, FR), Friche la Belle de Mai (Marseille, FR), Museum of Contemporary Art (Antwerp, BE), Centro de Bellas Artes (Madrid, ES), Loop Festival (Barcelona, ES), Coup de Ville (St. Niklaas, BE), Art International (Istanbul, TR), Judson Church / Movement Research (NYC, US), and Danspace St. Mark’s Church (NYC, US).

Today, Chantal Yzermans’ artistic practices are based in France.
