Building on her 2017 performance NOBOLERO, Chantal Yzermans revisits the iconic Ravel Boléro—originally premiered at the Paris Opéra on 22 November 1928, choreographed by Bronislava Nijinska for dancer Ida Rubinstein—and Béjart’s celebrated ballet version of 1960. Through this lens, she investigates the origins and originality of movement, revealing how artistic gestures evolve and resonate as they are filtered through the textures of history and collective memory.
In this hybrid live work, she counterpoints her choreographic reinterpretation with insights from neuroscientist Dr. Joëlle Adrien, examining the relationship between movement, perception, and the dreaming mind. Collaborating with photographer Aleksei Kazantsev and composer Manuel del Rincón, NOBOLERO 2.1 transforms the ritualistic essence of the stage version into a live audiovisual and screen-based experience, bridging performance, concert, and visual composition.
